Swimming Pool Maintenance & Repairs
Identifying a Home Owner Need
The swimming pool shown above is a Vinyl Swimming Pool with a rectangle layout and radius corners. These are fairly easy swimming pools to maintain and are forgiving due to the Vinyl texture of the walls. However, our home owner had a stubborn mold issue that they could not solve and decided to contact Illiana Backyard Fun to take a deeper look.
At first glance, we agreed that it appeared to be a chemical issue. After a couple of treatments, the mold issue did not subside. This prompted Kristie to evaluate the pool equipment where she located the issue. The sand filter was not properly filtering the water due to several broken laterals (fittings inside of the sand filter).
Once the issue was narrowed down to the pool equipment, the solution became much simpler. Kristie’s new goal was to fix the internal components of the sand filter. Once the filtration equipment is repaired, the swimming pool would regain proper filtration and the mold would be wiped out with basic chemical maintenance.
From Chemical Maintenance to Repairs
As we stated above, once we pinpointed the root cause of our mold proper (improper water filtration due to a damaged sand filter) we solved this proper quickly. Kristie, first began her work by removing the old filter media inside of the sand filter. Sand filters are large fiberglass tanks that can hold hundreds of pounds of filter media (typically sand and pea gravel). This filter media is packed into the sand filter so that water is finely filtered when pushed through at high pressure.
After opening up the filter, Kristie utilized a Shop Vac (can found at a local home depot) to remove the old filter media. This is typically a very easy step and the shop vac would suck out the old debris within a few minutes. However, our sand had crystallized on the bottom of our filter tank because the water had sat in the filter for too long without complete movement.
Good Ol’ Fashioned Hard Work!
Moving into manual debris removal, Kristie had to get a good ol’ fashioned plastic scoop and a strong arm to remove the solidified filter media from this sand filter. It’s of paramount importance to remove all old filter media when doing a sand change out. The reason being – old filter media can contaminate the new filter media rendering it less effective in proper filtration. Our objective here was to completely clean out the inside of this filter before repairing the broken components.
Rapid Equipment Repairs
After the old filter media was removed, we purchased a Lateral Component Kit from our local distributor. This kit includes new laterals, a manifold (to hold the laterals) and a PVC riser. We used this kit to rebuild the internal components of our sand filter.
Once our new manifold system was installed, we poured in our new filter media. In case you haven’t heard, we are avid believers in the Glass Filter Media by Maytronics. This is a relatively new filter media on the market but does an unbelievable job of filtering out particles from your pool water. In fact, this new glass media is capable of filtering your pool water down to 3-5 microns (which is the finest level of filtration in our industry).
Regular silica sand (the same as what we removed from this filter) only has the capability of filtering down to 20-30 microns. This is a massive improvement and will greatly boost the water clarity of our customer’s pool water!
